Why Do People Snore

Snoring is caused when there is a narrowed passageway between the nose and the throat. The passageway narrows because the muscles in your throat are more relaxed when you sleep. When inhaling oxygen while the passageway is narrowed, air will have to move faster than before, and will hit the tissues of the soft palate and the uvula with more force causing vibrations which in turn create snoring sounds.

The Reason Why Do People Snore

There can be many causes to why one snores when they sleep, anything that causes the air passageways to narrow will likely cause snoring.

Heredity and snoring

Snoring habit can be inherited from parents or even grand parents.A narrow throat, a cleft palate, enlarged adenoids and other physical attributes which contribute to snoring can be hereditary.

  • If someone has a narrow collapsible nose, a crooked nasal septum (the divider between the nostrils), or enlarged turbinates (the filters in the back of the nose) then there may be snoring vibrations emanating from the nose.
  • If someone’s soft palate including the tonsils, is floppy enough then snoring also can occur.
  • If the tongue is large or the jaw is small/ set back, then the area behind the tongue is smaller and vibrations can occur.
  • Mouth breathing and snoring

    We naturally want to breathe through our noses. Some people cannot breathe through their noses because of bstruction of the nasal passages. This can be caused by a deviation of the nasal septum, allergies, sinus infections, swelling of the turbinates, or large adenoids (tonsils in the back of the throat).

    People with nasal airway obstruction who must breathe through their mouths are therefore sometimes called “mouth breathers.” Many mouth breathers snore, because the flow of air through the mouth causes greater vibration of tissues.

    Sleep apnea and snoring

    Sleep apnea, a disruption of breathing while asleep, is a deceiving sleep disorder -90% of people who have sleep apnea don’t know that they have it! Although episodes of choking or gasping for air might occur hundreds of times throughout the night, you may not have any recollection of struggling for breath.Of course, not everyone who snores has sleep apnea–and not everyone who has untreated sleep apnea snores. But snoring is a common symptom of sleep apnea.

    Obesity and snoring

    Obesity is the biggest cause for snoring. As the body becomes overweight, fat deposits develop in various areas of the body, and the neck is no exception. Excess fatty, flabby tissue within the nasal cavities offers such an obstruction. The condition is even worse when the obese person lies on their back to sleep as the front of the neck is a prime site for the accumulation of excess fat and fluid and the weight of this squashes the airways.

    Overeating and snoring

    Being overweight can cause snoring, fat deposits develop in various areas of the body, and the neck is no exception. Excess fat within the nasal cavities can give interference to the airways. Fat that building on the neck area of overweight people can cause interference on the airways, this is because the weight of the excess fat crushing the throat. This obstruction that caused by excess fat is the reason overweight people snore.

    Alcohol/Sleeping Pills and snoring

    Alcohol is a depressant that causes your muscles to relax more than usual, which can lead to snoring. If you aren’t able to stop drinking entirely, you can minimize the effects of alcohol on your sleep by not drinking for at least 4 hours before going to sleep. This gives your body a chance to recover from the alcohol
    and the effects it can have on your sleep. Alcohol is not the only problem that can lead to these issues. Sleeping pills are another things that will affect you in much the same way as alcohol does. They are also depressants, and as such can lead to these same symptoms.

    Smoking and snoring

    The chemical laced cigarette smoke causes irreplaceable damage to the delicate tissue of the lungs and respiratory tracks. Constant exposure to the smoke irritates the outer layers of cells and causes inflammation all through the throat, sinus and the respiratory airways. If you are a chain smoker or smoke away a few cigarettes a day, you must be feeling the ill effects of the smoke- dry racking cough that never goes away, low immunity with constant colds, sinusitis and blocked nasal passages and last but not the least, habitual nightly snoring.

    Sleeping Position and snoring

    As we all know different sleeping positions can equal different types of snoring patterns and symptoms. For most snorers, snoring occurs while sleeping on their back. Some may only snore while on their backs while other may snore while sleeping in any position. Though sleeping on their back is the more typical case. Some may snore while laying on their side, this is less common. Then there are the people that snore in any an every position, it doesn’t matter what direction you turn them they just keep on snoring.

    Some studies show that sleep positions are relevant to the cause of the snoring and can have a greater effect to the body in certain positions, which can lead to sleep apnoea. A person that snores on their sides have a higher chance of developing sleep apnoea.

    Allergy and snoring

    Allergic rhinitis is a condition where the membrane lining the throat and nose becomes inflamed. It’s often set off by an allergic reaction to something that is inhaled. You’ve probably heard of seasonal allergic rhinitis – it’s more commonly known as hayfever.When the lining becomes inflamed, it causes the airway to be blocked which can lead to snoring.

    Age and snoring

    As we get older and physically change occur that may become a problem with snoring over time, because of muscles of tongue, soft tissues of the back nose and throat area becoming softer and more relaxed overall. As these muscles become weaker with age, the snoring can be more frequent.
